our story

Inspired by My Dad

Islands Against Cancer, Inc. was created in honor of my dad, Pat. He was quick to speak his mind, funny, sometimes a little bit of a stinker — but he had a heart of gold. If he could help someone, he always did.

When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I couldn’t bear the thought of him sitting and waiting for the end. I asked him what he wanted to do with the time he had left, and together we dreamed of a way to make life better for others facing cancer.

During his treatments — especially in the isolation of Covid — my dad noticed other elderly patients sitting alone, quiet and withdrawn, with no one to help them. He would tell me, “They’re just waiting to die.”

He knew how fortunate he was to have family and friends in healthcare who moved mountains to make sure he was cared for. He never had to face technology or treatment alone. But he also knew that so many others didn’t have that kind of support.

That was the spark that started Islands Against Cancer. I wanted to carry forward his legacy of compassion and honesty by building something that would give aging cancer warriors the tools, confidence, and dignity they deserve.

Today, every iPad, every listening device, every book, and every Advocate we provide is a reflection of his heart — and a promise that no patient should ever feel lost, devalued, or alone.
